Vaccine results lose significance under scrutiny. Few would have predicted the confusion that ensued when VaxGen released its long-awaited findings on 24 February. Over the next few days, VaxGen officials contradicted each other about how the data were analyzed and reported and whether some of the conclusions are statistically significant.

Candidate HIV/AIDS vaccines: Lessons learned from the world's first phase III efficacy trials
The North American/European trial will determined the efficacy of AIDSVAX B/B, a bivalent subtype B gp120 vaccine using MN and GNE8 antigens. The Thailand trial will determine the efficacy of AIDSVAX B/E, a bivalent gp120 vaccine containing the MN and A244 envelope antigens from subtype B and subtype E viruses respectively, against blood-borne infection.
