AIDS vaccine trial produces disappointment and confusion. On Saturday, 15 February, a team of data analysts from VaxGen checked into a hotel a short drive from their offices in Brisbane, California, using fictitious names. The scientists had come to "unblind" the results of the first-ever, real-world test of an AIDS vaccine, a 4-year study involving 5000 people.

VaxGen sticks to its guns. February 27, 2003. VaxGen issued a statement saying that the statistical analyses of the AIDSVAX trials was agreed on in advance with the U.S. FDA, including analyses of various subgroups and racial backgrounds, and the results reported on Monday remain accurate as stated. VaxGen announces initial results of its Phase III AIDS vaccine trial. February 24, 2003. Vaxgen, Inc. announced today the initial results from its three-year Phase III trials of AIDSVAX, a recombinant gp120 HIV vaccine. The reduction of HIV infection within the vaccinated population as a whole was not statistically significant. However, there was a statistically significant reduction of HIV infection in vaccinated non-white, non-Hispanic volunteers. More importantly, protection in this subgroup appeared to correlate with a higher level of neutralizing antibodies. [More...]

Env induces virus expression from resting CD4+ T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals. Production of infectious virus from resting CD4+ T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals can be induced following exposure of these cells to HIV-1 recombinant (oligomeric gp140) envelope protein and is not associated with markers of classic T cell activation, proliferation, or apoptosis.

Behavioral interventions alone or together with sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) interventions, and routine government health services and community development activities on HIV-1 and other STIs in rural Uganda were not sufficient to reduce the incidence of HIV-1.
