Hot News: Good news and not so good ones for AIDS vaccines. In research reported in Nature, scientists at Merck found that animals immunized with an adenoviral vector survived a usually lethal challenge with SHIV. The vaccine did not prevent infection but reportedly reduced the virus almost 1000-fold in vaccinated animals. But in a similar study by scientists at Harvard Medical School, a mutant and lethal form of the virus was reported to develop in monkeys vaccinated and protected a year ago, killing one of the animals.
